The Under Armour Roar’s season did not go as planned. With the preseason trade to return Jumbo with general manager Corliss Williamson was a strong move, along with the drafting of his side kick in the third round of the inaugural draft there was not a lot of other positives. The team finished up below .500 for the season and behind competitors and rival teams the league leading Adidas Outlaws and the Jordan Night Owls aka Justice League of America. With all teams headed to the playoffs, the Roar are led by their outside shooter The Destroyer and their inside presence Jumbo. The third member of the Roar is their swingman who also helps out in the scoring department Baby Shaq. The fourth man in the rotation and in charge of setting each of those guys up for their points is the point guard Easy Breezy. So far this year, the Roar have not been able to establish that fifth guy, and is probably why they have fell behind and not able to contend on a level that ownership would like for them to compete.
The Destroyer is a 25 year old from New York College. This being his third year in the league has set out to establish himself as a franchise building block. Being 6’4” and 225, he has the measurables and the scoring mentality to do just that. He has found a home on the Roar and they will look to build around him for the long term. This season The Destroyer has averaged 30 points, 4.25 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. He is the lead scorer and go to guy on the offensive side of the ball.
Jumbo, the Roar’s other building block is 7’1” tall and weighs 285. Jumbo is one of two rookies the Roar selected in the 2013 NBA Rookie Draft. He came to the Roar after playing four years for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks and leading them to a NCAA championship. Jumbo has really turned out to be a solid player. He is the main defensive cog for this team. Two things that he takes pride in are patrolling the paint and swatting shots at a rate of 3.85 shots per game. As the season has progressed he has gotten better and better at blocking opponents’ shots. He is also averaging 23.5 points and 13.25 rebounds per game.
The swingman for the Under Armour Roar is Baby Shaq. Baby Shaq is another young player this being his second year out of the University of Maryland. He was on a Terrapin team that played in 3 straight Elite Eight games and made one Final Four. He is a little undersized to play the small forward but he has a motor that will not quit. So far this year, he has averaged nearly a double-double with 15.65 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. He has really helped Jumbo in the rebounding, as well as The Destroyer with the providing another scorer who can some of the pressure. He is a good teammate and someone who wants to help his team succeed.
The other rookie for the Under Armour Roar came from north of the border where he attended college at the University of Western Ontario. Easy Breezy only played two years of basketball in high school before being picked up by the university to play on their basketball team. Easy Breezy stayed mainly in the books in high school and college and is evident in his game play today. He is a student of the game and loves to find innovative ways to get his teammates involved. Two of his favorite passes are the behind the back pass and the nutmeg between his opponents legs to a driving teammate for a layup. Easy Breezy is averaging a double-double with 10.8 points and 10.5 assists per game. He is on his way to being a great 2nd round choice for the Roar.
These four players are what have lead the Roar to where they are at this point in the game. If they would have a few years to gel, they may be a team to look out for. However, this year’s playoffs may be their last go round together as they will more than likely be broken up in the expansion draft. Can the solid four for the Roar find a fifth player to plug into the starting rotation? Will The Destroyer have enough fire power, will Jumbo provide enough defense and swats, can Baby Shaq provide the support his teammates need, and can Easy Breezy spread the ball around enough for this team to make it into the second round of the playoffs? Only time will tell. Hopefully there will be a Southern Conference Championship between The Roar and the Outlaws and a Dynasty 7even Championship matchup with the Justice League of America on the Roar’s way to a title.
